Now Get Windows 10 Updates Using Peer-to-peer Technology of Torrents

peer-to-peer-p2p-update-microsoft-windows-10
The upcoming operating system from Microsoft is witnessing numerous changes. As the launch date of the final version is approaching, newer details are surfacing about the new features coming with the upgrade. Last week we saw the advent of a new translucent Start Menu feature in Star Menu in build 10031. After the much talked about Cortana integration, Spartan browser and Continuum feature, here’s something new for you.
The Verge has reported that Microsoft will be distributing the new updates in Windows 10 using a peer-to-peer protocol i.e. P2P technology. Till now Microsoft delivers the updates from a single source and with Windows 10, company is moving ahead with P2P.
Peer-to-peer technology is a decentralized model of communication where each participant has some data sending or receiving capabilities. In the usual server-client model, the client system makes a request to the server and the server completes it. Whereas in P2P, each participant functions both as server and client. Torrenting works on the same P2P protocol with its seeds and leechers terminology.
This Peer-to-peer updating system will be optional. If you’ll choose to go with this feature, you will be able to download the updates using two modes:
Your PC will receive updates from the other systems on the same network. Or,
Your PC will be receiving the same both from the local network or the PCs on the web.
peer-to-peer-p2p-updates-microsoft-windows-10
Image: The Verge
Back in 2013, Microsoft acquired Pando Networks, which is a peer-to-peer file sharing technology just like BitTorrent. So, this movement towards P2P isn’t surprising. It’s not clear if Microsoft is using the same technology for peer-to-peer updates or something else, but it surely has some Pando Networks connection.

The P2P networking came into existence since the invention of ARPANET, but the advantages of P2P protocol became obvious to the people in late 1990s. The music sharing application Napster appeared using the P2P sharing followed by Gnutella and BitTorrent. This is also used to provide an anonymous route to the network traffic and distribute storage. Most commonly used applications of P2P networking pertain to the media sharing services.
The Verge writes that this could spark some security concerns related to the cogency of updates and it’s very possible the Microsoft has surely built some solid methods to full proof and verify the updates before installation.
With this peer-to-peer update system, Windows will be receiving updates more often. At present, every PC downloads updates for itself from the servers at Microsoft and gulps the prized bandwidth allowance which will be useful for data plans with limitations.
The software giant hasn’t yet made any official announcement, but it is expected to be included on some upcoming Windows 10 preview.

How to Download Torrents Online Using IDM? 4 Working Ways for You!

So you are in college or in a firm where you operate behind a proxy server. The company and colleges have placed many restrictions on many sites and you can not download torrent files . I was going through the same problem when I entered into my college. In my first year, I made use of the following sites. I used to download almost all of my stuff through torrents, simply because they are easy to find and quick to download. Now I use Tor but sometimes I still make use of these sites. So, I would like to  share with you some of the methods to download torrents online.
1. Boxopus
What is Boxopus?
Boxopus is a service which downloads your torrents without any software and stores it in the cloud. Also, Boxopus is a nice monster that you see in the logo.
How does Boxopus work?
Simple. You point Boxopus what torrent you want to download. After Boxopus downloads the files it will notify you by email and you can get it from here.
How much does the service cost?

The basic account is absolutely free. You can download a torrent file up to 512 MB in size with unlimited speed with a free account.  Also, you can get much more with PRO account (more traffic, more features, more anonymity, higher speed).

2. ByteBX

ByteBX is a cloud storage service which lets you store files from the computer and also upload torrent files in its server. You can download the particular torrent after it is uploaded in its server. It has a free account which lets you store torrent files up to 2.5 GB. But the download speed comes with a limitation of 200KB/s.

3.BT Cloud

BTCloud is a cloud storage integrated with the global BitTorrent network. It comes with a free account which lets you upload 1 GB of torrent files and the download speed is unlimited.

 4.ZbigZ

ZbigZ  used to provide unlimited download speed  two year back, but it has changed its speed restrictions to 150 KB/s. The main advantage of this site over others is you don’t need to sign up to download if you want to download for free. Two years back there was a hack which lets you download torrent using its premium account. I don’t know if it works now, and you can search it online. I would write an article on it if somebody ask for it.  So leave a comment below.

Conclusion –  My favorite has always been Boxopus simply because it provides unlimited download speed. Although there is a size restriction but I mainly used it for downloading torrent low in size. I don’t have to leave my browser for downloading any torrent.  Simply add a magnetic link and wait for the torrent to upload. Surf the internet till it is uploaded. Download it and enjoy. Simple.

5 Reasons Why You should not use Microsoft’s Windows 10 Technical Preview Version

Microsoft’s Windows 10 Technical Preview may seem to be a good alternative for current Windows users, But in reality it aint so!!!

Microsoft seems to have decided not to release next major build of its Windows 10 desktop preview version next week but instead offering an update for the current Windows 10 Technical Preview 9926 version. It seems that Microsoft is running slow of it schedules or what tech world has expected of it.
Not to forget that Microsoft’s final Windows 10  build won’t be available to all users commercially, until this fall. Looking at the bleak scenario, users looking for Windows 10 final build are trying out the Windows 10 Technical Preview for free, but is it really a wise to do so?
Here are 5 top reasons why I think installing Microsoft’s Windows 10 Technical Preview is not a wise decision!
1. Windows 10 Technical Preview not the best Microsoft is going to give you in terms of software
Like all major companies, Microsoft’s Windows 10 Technical Preview has been released to test the major things it lacks. Also it is a beta version for vulnerabilities, bugs and flaws that should be fixed before the Windows 10 commercial release. What that means is, Microsoft needs as many users as possible to test Windows 10 Preview on their PC’s to help it check how it can improve the Windows 10.
More on this can be understood by reading the Windows insider program
2. Bugs , Bugs and More Bugs
Since you have chosen to test out the Windows 10 TP, you should be knowing that your PC will become more prone to bugs, vulnerabilities and crashes. Some users are even reporting BSODs.  What that means is your ‘Familiar PC’ may become very unfamiliar to you with very new and unexpected problems starting to kick in, which could be anything starting from PC getting slow to overheating, to a total performance downgrade.
3. Software Issues / Incompatibility
One of the major reason why you should not opt for the Windows 10 TP version is that you may face various software incompatibility issue.
Think about it, you try to access a software and it goes dead with your freshly downloaded Windows 10 TP version. As said above, Windows 10 TP is a guinea pig of sorts and it may be some time before Microsoft’s engineers put all the drivers and software components for all Apps and accessories. Knowing that you are just a part of the great Microsoft Windows 10 TP lab program, it could a very bad idea, especially, if you run variety of softwares on your PC, Even Microsoft warns you of that,
“Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything. Some printers and other hardware might not work, and some software might not install or work correctly, including antivirus or security programs. You might also have trouble connecting to home or corporate networks.”
4. If you are a privacy advocate, you should be knowing that your Windows 10 TP version use will be closely monitored by Microsoft.
Well, a technical preview version is always made to do so, monitoring every system it is on to gather useful information on how to improve itself. but there are side effects of it too. With new revelation coming every day on how tech companies are monitoring you and sharing those data with law agencies or ad networks, it may not be a wise decision to go for Windows 10 TP. For more information visit preview privacy statement from Microsoft which states,
“When you acquire, install and use the Programme software and services, Microsoft collects information about your use of the software and services as well as about the devices and networks on which they operate. Examples of data we may collect include your name, email address, preferences and interests; location, browsing, search and file history; phone call and SMS data; device configuration and sensor data; voice, text and writing input; and application usage.”
5. Reverting back is as usual, slow and boring process of reinstalling your old version of Windows
Incase you get dissatisfied by the Windows 10 TP version and is thinking of rolling back to your old version of Windows you will have to go through the process of reinstalling, recovery disc or USB recovery drive.
While these are only very few reasons why choosing the Windows 10 TP version is not a wise decision you should also keep it in mind that Microsoft is not giving all the features which it announced will be coming with Windows 10 and for that you will have to wait for the final version.
The user experience or System performance will be different from a user to another depending upon his hardware and software/ driver uses. so if it performs well for your friend, it does not mean that you will get the same experience using it on your PC.

USBkill – Code That Turns USB Drives Into PC Killing Weapon

usbkill-kills-computer-usb
Here’s a news that will cheer up all the activists, criminals, activists and whistle blowers. Now they have got a new tool called USBkill to save themselves by shutting down the computer before the sensitive information will be examined.
USBkill turns your USB into a kill switch once activated. It’s a program – a computer code that will disable the computer if there’s any activity at the USB port. This weapon could be kept in the USB drives and attached to the computers with sensitive information.

This “Killer USB” Flash Drive Will Explode Your Computer

Hephaestos, the programmer who wrote the USBkill script, says that USBkill is an anti-forensic USB. He says that it will be of utmost important in case the police busts your bunker, or steals your laptop. USB waits for some change at USB ports and then suddenly kills your computer. He writes:
The police will use a mouse jiggler to keep the screensaver and sleep mode from activating. If this happens you would like your computer to shut down immediately. Additionally, you may use a cord to attach a USB key to your wrist. Then insert the key into your computer and start USBkill. If they then steal your computer, the USB will be removed and the computer shuts down immediately.
If the police catches you, you would want your PC to shut down immediately. He advises the users to tie the USB drive to your wrist and instantly start the USBkill by removing the USB when cops knock down your door.
He adds that users must use full disk encryption, otherwise law enforcement agencies will have their party anyway.
It’s an unfinished work and will be improved by Hephaestos. But, it does work effectively.

Google Being Forced to Reveal Its “Secret Search Algorithm” – The Heart of Google

google-forced-to-reveal-search-algorithm-france
searchengineland.com
Google’s secret search algorithm, the heart of Google, may not be a secret anymore. A law is under consideration in France that would force the search engine giant to reveal its most secret treasure- Google’s search algorithm. This would be one of the toughest supervisory over the internet company. The Financial Times has reported that the French government is passing a law in the French senate that could possibly force Google to publish the details of the method it uses to rank websites and show search results.
It is most likely that France will be passing this law this week and it will give rights to the national telecom regulator to keep an eye on Google’s search algorithm. It should be kept in mind that recently the Wall Street Journal published a report that lashed harsh allegations of FTC’s incompetence to trial Google for its unfair search algorithm.
According to a study, Google handles more than 90% of searches in Europe which is greater than its 68% share in the America.
Catherine Morin-Desailly, chair of the Senate’s culture, education and communication committee said: “The government is well aware of the issues. It’s a question of ensuring fairness. Too many businesses view search engines as bottlenecks. The net is tightening around [Google].”
On the other hand, the European Union has been harsher towards Google and is going to accuse the search engine of illegally favoring its own services. This move could harm Google big time and Google, obviously, isn’t happy.
A spokesperson for Google said: Revealing our algorithms — our intellectual property — would lead to the gaming of our results, which would be a bad experience for users.
FT writes that this move should be seen as a part of growing bitterness for Silicon Valley in the European Union. In the past, American technology companies have faced charges due to tax theft, unfair business tactics and more. One of the most interesting cases was the “right to be forgotten” that required Google to provide a choice to the users to be forgotten.
Google’s search engine algorithm is the heart of Google and it will surely find a way to dodge this law. This algorithm is the key to its dominance and power. It is unclear how Google will react to this regulation in France. As the lost resort, Google could scrap its services from France the way it did in Spain last year as a result of some regulations.
Is Google going to reveal its search algorithm? Tell us in comments!

Top 10 Free Wireless Network hacking/monitoring tools for ethical hackers and businesses

Ten Free Wireless Hacking Software

There are lots of free tools available online to get easy access to the WiFi networks intended to help the network admins and the programmers working on the WiFi systems and we at Team Techworm have picked the top 10 of those for ethical hackers, programmers and businessmen.
Internet is now a basic requirement be it office or home as it is majorly used in smartphones besides computer. Most of the times people prefer to use wireless network LAN which is much easier and cost effective.
It has been observed that the neighborhood WiFi hot-spots are visible on user’s device however one can get access to the same only by cracking password with the sole purpose of using free internet. Also in case of big firms where all the employees are connected through a wireless network admin might want to keep a check on the network traffic and hence even they need tools to crack the network.
Vulnerability in the wireless LAN is majorly due to poor configuration and poor encryption. Poor configuration includes the case of weak password mainly done purposefully by the network admin to check the network traffic. Poor encryption is dangerous as it is related to the 2 security protocols WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA (WiFi Protected Access) and WPA is again of 2 types WPA1 and WPA2, WPA was introduced in 2003 as WEP protocol was easy to crack. The tools used to hack the network is used either for the
  • purpose of sniffing the network : as is the case of network admins and
  • cracking the password: used by programmers to rectify the trouble shooting and by the people who want to use internet free of cost. It has been seen that based on this concept there are around 10 tools together which can be understood to hack wireless LAN.

Aircrack

Most popular wireless password cracking tool, it attacks 802.11a/b/g WEP and WPA. This tool manufacturers also provides tutorial for installation of the tool and its usage for cracking the password. Prior to using this tool it is essential to confirm that the wireless card can inject packets as this is basis of WEP attack. This can be downloaded from: http://www.aircrack-ng.org/
2) Cain & Able: This tool intercepts the network traffic and cracks the passwords forcibly using crypt-analysis attack methods. It also helps to recover the wireless network keys by analyzing routine protocols. Can be downloaded from : http://www.oxid.it/cain.html

inSSIDer

This tool has been awarded “Best Opensource Software in Networking” and is a paid software available at a cost of $19.99. This is popular scanner for Microsoft Windows and OS X operating systems and can do a lot of tasks which can be helpful for the admins to sniff the network LAN. Can be downloaded from : http://www.inssider.com/

WireShark

This is network protocol analyzer. So again good for the network admins to keep a check on the traffic. Basic requirement is that the user should have a good knowledge of the network protocol only then they can use this tool. Can be downloaded from : https://www.wireshark.org/

CoWPAtty

This tool is an automated dictionary attack tool for WPA-PSK. CoWPatty is simple to use however it is slow as tool uses the password dictionary for generating hack for each word contained in the dictionary by using the SSID. Can be downloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/cowpatty/

Airjack

This is a Wi-Fi 802.11 packet injection tool. Mostly used to check for the “man-in-the-middle (MiTm) flaws” in the network and mitigate them. Can be downloaded from : http://sourceforge.net/projects/airjack/

WepAttack

This is an open source Linux tool for breaking 802.11 WEP keys. While working with this tool a WLAN card is required and basically the tool attacks working key using the dictionary words. Can be downloaded from : http://wepattack.sourceforge.net/

OmniPeek

This is again network analyzer tool working only on Windows OS. This tools captures and analyzes the network traffic. The tool can be also used for trouble shooting. Can be downloaded from : http://www.wildpackets.com/products/distributed_network_analysis/omnipeek_network_analyzer

CommView for WiFi

This is for wireless monitoring and protocol analysis. Captured packets can be decoded by user-defined WEP or WPA keys.  This again is mainly used to monitor the WiFi traffic by the professional programmers, protocol admins and even at homes. Can be downloaded from : http://www.tamos.com/products/commwifi/

CloudCracker

This is online password cracking for WPA protected WiFi networks. It is used to crack the passwords by using a dictionary of around 300 million words. Can be downloaded from : https://www.cloudcracker.com/
Most of these tools are free; some of them are for protocol analyzers to monitor the trouble shooting whereas others are for hacking the password for unauthorized internet access also there are tools which use the dictionary words to crack the password.
For the network admins and the professional programmers these tools should be more helpful for understanding the cracking of password and hence helping them professionally.
However, one needs to be cautious when using the tools as this might be an offense to use the tools to crack the passwords and get unauthorized access to the internet in some countries. Also such kind of tools are also used by cyber criminals and terrorists to get easy access for free usage of internet anonymously.

Save Your Eyes From Computer Strain Using f.lux for Windows, Mac and Linux

flux-eyes-strain
No more watery eyes, when you wake up from sleep in the middle of the night to work on your bright computer screen. Your eye savior, f.lux is here. First things first, what is f.lux and why do you need it?

Why do you need f.lux ?

Decreasing the brightness is not that attractive an option, because the blue light emissions from your screen is still significant enough to well up your eyes with water and completely ruin your sleepy state. It is proven that exposure to blue light significantly aids in keeping you awake for a longer time in the night.
To get to the science behind it, here’s why. Most of us don’t know this, but there is another kind of receptor cells beside rods and cones in our retina. It’s called Melanopsin. The discovery was made about 15 years ago. Melanopsin is sensitive to narrow band of blue light in 460-480 nm range. Melanopsis works different functions for different creatures, but that’s another story.
There are two things I’d like to recommend to your reading list to get more information about melanopsin and effect of blue light on sleep:
1) Internal Time by Til Roennberg
2) Research Papers and articles – link

What is f.lux what does it do?

f.lux is a desktop applet for Windows, Linux, Mac, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch which limits the glow of your screen. Instead, it replaces that with a warm tone. There is no problem for your eyes not to feel comfortable on the screen in the morning. The daylight is sufficient and doesn’t let your eyes feel the glow that the screen throws. But say at 11 PM while you are, say trying to work late after sneaking on your father or wife, you power up your computer and you get instantly taken back by the brightness!
You can reduce the brightness and contrast to a certain extent, but there is a limit to which you can go without compromising your experience. f.lux comes to rescue here. It automatically switches to a warm tone at night and goes back to a brighter shade in the morning.
Don’t worry as it uses only 3.86MB of RAM approximately, is completely free, has no CPU load and works like a charm without any user interference. The working is also fairly simple. You can also customize the way it works, especially how warm you want your screen to be at night.

How to use f.lux to save your eyes?

It does the work by calculating your present location (through google maps)and works according to the sunrise/sunset cycle. The f.lux indicator applet automatically manages the color temperature of your screen based on your latitude and longitude, or if you are in the US, your zip code.
flux-save-your-eyes
In the preferences panel, you can set your preferred night-time color temperature and see a preview, as well as seeing the current color temperature.
flux-save-your-eyes-1
flux-save-your-eyes-2
You can even pause the applet if you want to:
flux-save-your-eyes-3
You can download f.lux for windows here and for Mac here.
For iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch you need to jailbreak your device in order to install it. You can follow the instructions here.
To install f.lux on Linux (Ubuntu) open up the terminal and copy paste the following commands one by one.
If you are having an error in adding the ppa (the first command), follow this link to troubleshoot it.
The Linux GUI of the f.lux applet doesn’t provide as much customizing options as that of the other platforms, so if you are interested in adding features to it, you could do it on its open source code on GitHub.
If you have any other query regarding f.lux, comment your queries below. Do share your experiences.

How To Save Instagram Photos To Your Mobile And Desktop

instagram-save-photos
Just like WhatsApp, Instagram’s acquisition was one of the most wise decisions made by Facebook. Instagram is one of most used photgraphy apps and I know it’s one your favorite apps for photo sharing. Based on a user request, today I’m sharing something related to Intagram and how to use it to the fullest.
There are different method of saving the Instagram images on different devices, so today I am going to show you the best way of getting these photo saved in high quality. I’ll be breaking the tutorial in three parts. Let’s take a look at them one by one.

1. Save Instagram photos while uploading (Mobile)

To save your Instagram photos during the upload, you have to follow some pretty simple steps. Open Instagram app on your device and go to app settings by clicking on the hamburger symbol located at top right corner. Now find and enable Save Original Photos option. This will automatically save a copy of the image you upload on Instagram from next time.

2. Save Instagram photos without uploading (Mobile)

As most of us already know that the quality of photos taken and uploaded on Instagram are quite good, but what if you just want to click a picture, edit it using Instagram filters and keep it in the device. Instagram does not offer any direct method to save the clicked images to your device. So here is the method to save the picture without uploading:
  • To save the photos without uploading first you need to make sure that you have enabled the Save Original Photos option as mentioned above.
  • Now take the photo you wish to save in your device without uploading, and apply the filters to enhance the quality.
  • Now go to the control center and turn Airplane mode on.
  • Now return to the Instagram app and tap on the right tick symbol in order to upload the photo. The upload will obviously fail, but your photo will be saved to your device which you can access from your Gallery.save-instagram-photo-without-upload

3. Save Instagram photos in your desktop

Saving your Instagram photos in your desktop is a little tricky process for those who don’t know about inspect element. Although it’s not very difficult and you can of-course snip the photo easily, but that will reduce the quality of your image. So here is the method to save the Instagram photo in your desktop without reducing its quality:
  • Right click on the photo you want to save and then click on Inspect element. instagram-picture-save
  • This will bring a sidebar with some HTML code. Copy the code which is highlighted as blue, it will be enclosed in the src attribute.instagram-inspect-element
  • Paste the URL in a tab and delete everything except the image code. Which starts with “https://” and end with “.jpg” and press enter
  • Your picture will be appeard that tab, right click and save it.instagram-photo-saving

Free Tool Lets You See Facebook Hidden Friends List of Others

how-to-facebook-friends-mapper-hidden-friend-list-
In recent past, Facebook has brought more power to the users and now they can control all the information they’ve shared on their Facebook accounts. You can go to your Facebook privacy settings and limit the visibility of posts, pictures and whatnot.
Many of you would have set the privacy of your friends list as private. But this isn’t enough.
A week ago, a new Chrome extension came into the limelight and it claims to reveal the hidden friends list to your friends. I tried out this tool myself and the “Only Me” option to keep your friends list hidden from the world doesn’t work anymore.

How does this Facebook Friends Mapper extension for Chrome work?

Facebook Friends Mapper Chrome extension fools the mutual friends feature of the Facebook and collects the hidden friends’ data of your friends and makes them public for you.
Let’s suppose a friend of yours doesn’t share his/her friends list but has few mutual friends with you. THN writes: “If, for example, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg does not share his friends list with the public and neither I am on his friend list. However, I have at least one mutual friend with him. So using Facebook Friends Mapper tool I would be able to see most of his hidden Facebook friends by exploiting the ‘mutual friend’ logical flaw.”

How to use Facebook Friends Mapper extension for Chrome?

Step 1:
To see any friend’s hidden friends list, you need to download and install the Facebook Friend Mapper extension.
Step 2:
Now go to your friend’s profile whom you are wishing to see the hidden friends list. You will be seeing a new (Reveal Friends) option in the friends tab.
facebook-friends-mapper-hidden-friend-list-
Step3:
Click on the Reveal Friends option and you will be able to see all the friends whether they are your mutual friends or not.
facebook-friends-mapper-hidden-friend-list
Warning: These kinds of extension are not good for your web browser, I just installed them in order to make the tutorial and write about this flaw. So I won’t recommend you to use this on a permanent basis.
Note: However to use this Facebook Friends Mapper Chrome extension, you must have one mutual friend with the target. It doesn’t matter of you are Facebook friends with that person or not.
If someone uses this tool, your privacy settings won’t work for that person and your hidden friends list will be exposed. I hope Facebook fixes this logical flaw before this tool goes viral.
You can install and check out the Facebook Friends Mapper Chrome extension for free.

8 Google Fun Tricks That You’d Love to Know

Internet is Google and Google is Internet for many of us. You use Google everyday but you will not be knowing some tricks, funny searches and games that Google provides hidden behind its vast layers of database.
You will ask me that what is the use of these things, I would simply say that it’s just for fun. It is something you can show to your friends, impress them , show them your geeky side. In fact when I showed these things to one of my friends, he was really impressed with me and asked me how I came to knew about  them. So I thought about posting it online, therefore I tracked down all the tricks and compiled a list of them. Here it goes:

1. Do a barrel roll trick: google-barrel-roll-trick-pic
Go to Google.com and simply type in the search box “do a barrel roll” and see the magic . The page will rotate two times.

Google search tricks: 9 incredibly useful things you can do with the search engine

Google is very simple to use, but are you making the most of it?

Most people know how to use Google. You visit the homepage enter in some search terms and boom: you get results.
However, there are a number of little tricks you can use to make sure you find what you are looking for as quickly as possible.
There are even some not search-related tools that are incredibly useful, such as a timer, and some silly ones that mess around with the way the page appears.
Here's our run down of the best.

Search for an exact phrase

You can search for an exact phrase, like this
You can search for an exact phrase, like this
If you are looking for a precise phrase or quote, put the words into quotation marks, for example "pug riding a unicorn". You're welcome.

Find websites that are similar to one you like

If you have a favourite website and are looking for something similar, just type “related:” along with the website you know.
So if you like the Mirror.co.uk, you’d search “related:mirror.co.uk” and it will show you other news websites. So, er, the Telegraph is pretty close by the looks of it.

Find the meaning of words you don’t understand

Are you afraid of long words? Here's the word for it
Instead of looking for an online dictionary and then entering in a word you don’t know, you can simply enter the word straight into Google’s search bar, along with the command “define:”
So if aren't sure what hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia means, you’d put in “define: hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia” and you’ll find out it means fear of long words. Seriously.

Convert metric to imperial and vice versa

If you want to make a quick conversion between miles and kilometres, just enter the search term “10 miles in km” and it will come up with the answer. You can do the same for kilos and pounds, inches and cm. The same works for currency conversions.

Search when you are missing words or letters

If you are trying to remember an actor but you can’t remember his or her first name, this is the perfect tool for you. Just use the asterisk as a wild card - that means you can swap any word or letter and results containing all alternatives will be delivered. So if you search for “actor * Johnson” it will search for actors with the second name Johnson. But we only really care about Dakota at the moment.

Find out the time in another country

You can easily find the time in another country

Have a loved one in another time zone or need to make a business call to somewhere far away? Find out what time it is by entering the command “time:” followed by the country or city. It's always time for a beer somewhere in the world.

Search within a website

If you know you remember an article about, say, pugs on a specific website but can’t quite remember the title, just enter “pugs site:bbc.co.uk” or any other variation involving keywords you are looking for and the website you want to search.

Set a timer

It’s pretty self-explanatory but if you need a countdown, just enter in “set a timer for 10 seconds” (or 10 minutes or 10 hours) and Google will let you know when the time’s up with an alarm. Good for people who waste a lot of time down internet rabbit holes.

Pointless but fun

If you want to have fun with the search engine type “tilt” or “do a barrel roll” into the search bar.

AROUND(): A Google Search Operator You May Not Know About

google-around-search-operator--Here is this handy operator developed by Daniel Russell which comes in as a handy trick when you are googling stuff. It’s a handy trick, particularly when you’re looking for combination of search terms (containing two or more search keywords) when one dominates the results, but you’re interested in the relationship between two query terms.
The AROUND(n) operator (used in uppercase, as shown with n = a number) is an undocumented Google search operator that will help you find documents where the distance between two search terms is around ‘n’. The higher the number ‘n’ the less is the proximity between the search words. Here’s an example:
A research query that says “hot springs” will mostly show search results about geographical hot springs (because these two words are maximized in use together than with separation between them).
google-around-search-operator
However, if we modify the query to look like “hot AROUND(5) springs,” you get results where the two terms are written on the page in close proximity.
google-around-search-operator-
Also, note also that if Google is unable to find anything within the limit (of ‘n’), it will just do regular ranking of the terms without the AROUND coming into the application.
This operator is particularly helpful in long articles or long text, for example searching Google books. It is also helpful for when searching for quotes, speeches or a song that’s stuck in your head, but you can only think of a few words from it.
Google’s wildcard search operator, represented by Asterisk (hot * springs), may achieve similar results   but with AROUND, you even get to specify the distance between the two search terms.
Note: Do remember to write AROUND in all CAPS, else it won’t work.
